Baldwin Boxall Disabled Refuge System

VIGIL OmniCare is an addressable emergency voice communication system that allows disabled refuge, fire telephones and disabled toilet alarm remote units to be connected to just one system. It has been developed in accordance with BS5588, BS5839 part 9 and BS8300:2001 (for the disabled toilet alarm).

Full Description

The Complete Emergency Voice Communication System (EVC)

VIGIL OmniCare is an addressable emergency voice communication system that allows disabled refuge, fire telephones and disabled toilet alarm remote units to be connected to just one system. It has been developed in accordance with BS5588, BS5839 part 9 and BS8300:2001 (for the disabled toilet alarm).

OmniCare is an addressable system (via the remote) which is simple to install and operate. The remote units are wired in a ring circuit configuration and are ‘self-learning’, thus enabling the auto-commissioning feature. The system utilises enhanced four-core cable plus screen ring circuit technology to allow continued operation in the event of a cable break. Should part of a circuit be broken, or damaged, all the remote units will continue to work. The flexibility of the system allows any combination of remotes to be linked to the Control Panel on a single wiring loop.

In addition to two types of disabled refuge remote and the fire telephone remotes, a combined remote (fire telephone/disabled refuge) has been developed for the range. Also, disabled toilet alarms can be connected to the system (via a repeater unit).

VIGIL OmniCare has two main components; the Master Control Panel(s) and the Remote Units. The master control panel is typically wall mounted within a central control room. The remote units are wall mounted in locations such as refuge areas, stairwells, fallback positions, corridors and other ‘gathering’ points, at a height easily reached by users (please refer to BS5839 part 9 explained) for recommended mounting heights). More than one master panel can be placed on the ring circuit, thus allowing control of local areas.

How can VIGIL OmniCare help you?...

  • Loop wiring - saves up to 75% on cabling costs when compared to typical star circuit systems.
  • One loop for multiple styles of remote unit - great flexibility. Combined remote unit available - featuring fire telephone and disabled refuge in one.

  • Satisfy the requirements of the DDA.
  • Assurance of Baldwin Boxall’s reputation for quality and support.
  • Above all - VIGIL OmniCare can help you save life!

OmniCare - System Requirements

Fire rated enhanced four core cable with a screen must be used for loops. Up to 200m cable run between Remote Units and Master Control Panel as standard. A repeater unit must be used if distance between remote units exceeds 200m.

  • Disabled Refuge, Fire Telephone, combined DRS/Fire Telephone and Toilet
  • Alarm Units can be placed on the same loop. Typically 20-30 remotes per loop.
  • A ring circuit configuration must be used to wire the remotes.
  • Repeaters are used to connect the Toilet Alarms to the system.

There is incidence of unusually high capacitance of MICC cable and we would ask you to down rate the distances as shown below. The capacitance of MICC cable varies between manufacturers so if you do have to specify MICC cable and if the runs are greater than 100 metres, you may wish to contact our technical team to ensure it is within tolerance.

  • MICC lightweight four core with screen: 100m.
  • MICC heavyweight four core with screen: 200m.
  • Enhanced colour coded four core with screen: 200m (recommended by Baldwin Boxall).

OmniCare - Fire Panel Interface
Fire panel interface

The OmniCare disabled refuge remotes have the option to be triggered by the fire detection system so that the remote units become active during an evacuation emergency (Fire Telephones and Disabled Toilet Alarms are constantly active). The advantage of this is that it prevents either accidental or deliberate misuse of the remote units as they remain dormant until activated.

This does mean, however, that in order to activate the system for any other purpose it is necessary to override the fire panel. By connecting a ‘break glass’ unit (BVCRBG) to the master control panel, it is possible to activate the system during a non-emergency situation, also allowing weekly testing and routine maintenance - as set out in BS5839 part 9.

OmniCare - IP Rated Remote Enclosure

IP Rated Remoe EnclosureThe unit has been designed to allow the standard disabled refuge remotes to be fitted in external areas - such as fire escapes, balconies, multi-storey car parks, etc. This unit adds further flexibility to the system and, by being IP66 rated, keeps the electronics weatherproof (order code BVCRIPB).

Measuring 200 mm (W) x 200 mm (H) x 80 mm (D) the box is red in colour and is supplied for surface mount only.

Fitted with termination card for easy install of remote unit.

OmniCare - Plasterboard Back Box

Plasterboard Back BoxThe plasterboard back box has been designed to facilitate the mounting of the standard disabled refuge remotes in stud partition walls with ease. The boxes are of steel construction and are supplied with either a red (BVCRFBR) or stainless steel (BVCRFBS) bezel.

The unit has three 20 mm ‘knockouts’ top and bottom for cable entry.
Dimensions: 131mm (W) x 142mm (H) x 65mm (D) (requires a
cut out of 134 mm (W) x 150 mm (H)).

Fitted with termination card for easy install of remote unit.

Baldwin Boxall can offer routine maintenance if required.
